Well if femmes are (as I tend to think) noted for being able to spark-breed (or to be exact, carry a new spark until it's strong enough to have it's own body), then they probably are encouraged to choose a mech partner, though it's more important for them to have sparkings no matter who they pair up with. So in addition to however the twins would react, the two would have to deal with all this crap from everyone else as well if they chose to go public, and probably rumours even if they don't.
The irony there is Spike is already in TFA style, though it'd depend on what age G1 Spike is at the time he gets swapped with Sari - if he's only a teenager, he'd be younger than his TFA equivalent (who is more modelled on how he was in season 3 G1). Well, I meant teen!Spike, as I already knew that. (Oh! Time paradox!)
