Maybe Hound is secretly Primus and instead of making holograms, he actually blurs the barrier between alternate dimensions to create phantom images.

Perhaps Prowl and Red Alert are the ones with the secret handshake - if they see something really weird going on, they quickly do the handshake and focus on it (because they have a REASON for doing it, so it's less illogical that whatever else is happening).
