This has the potential to be very confusing.
I'm going to outright admit that I've never seen the Cybertron portion of the Unicron trilogy, but I have read about it, and this bunny was spawned due to something that I found rather odd: Why does Vector Prime have a Minicon partner? I understand that Minicons provide power boosts when they link with their partners, but they're also Unicron's creations. Given, they rebelled against him once they gained their own consciousness, but with their origin I don't think Vector Prime would be willing to link with one...if Primus would even let him link with one. I guess he could have a partner that he doesn't link to, but how would that work?
Then it hit me: What if Safeguard wasn't created by Unicron? What if he was created by Vector?
Then I got hit by additional ideas around the subject.
a. Vector gives the individual who will become Safeguard time abilities. Thing is, those time abilities are available to the individual throughout their entire timeline, not just from the point they receive the abilities. That's how Vector identifies who will become Safeguard. When Vector Prime finds an individual with time abilities that have no obvious origin, it's likely that he later gives that individual the abilities because if he doesn't, it could cause a dangerous time paradox. So Vector Prime really has no control over who will eventually become Safeguard. They usually get along, but sometimes they really hate each other.
b. Safeguard isn't always the same individual. Some individuals are more likely to become Safeguard than others, but Vector's learned not to make assumptions. There is no telling who is destined to become Safeguard until Vector meets that individual, and even then it might take him a while to figure it out. Sometimes, he doesn't figure it out until Safeguard's future self runs into him.
c. While you'd think that all Safeguards are Cybertronians, that's actually not necessary. Cybertronians are the most likely species, but other species (e.g. Quintesson, Human, Martian, Vok, Rock Lord, Dragon, anything really) can become Safeguard. When a non-Cybertronian species becomes Safeguard, they may become Cybertronian, partially Cybertronian, or just stay the same species. It depends on things.
d. In fact Safeguards don't even have a consistent set of abilities. There is such a wide range that Vector's started keeping notes.
e. Safeguards are not immortal. They can be killed. They can die of old age, although they do tend to live longer than a normal member of their species. It appears that they are meant to live as long as an average member of their species plus the time they spend assisting Vector. Because of this, most universes actually have multiple Safeguards. It's usually somewhere between 3-4, but the most Vector's ever run across was 27. He hopes never to have that many Safeguards again.
f. Crossovers are possible and encouraged.
g. Now that I think about it, this could be an amusing drabble series.
