One long, complicated, effed-up bunny
Long and really complicated bunny is long, really complicated, and probably a little fucked-up.
Autobot and Decepticon are more than just factions and/or political standings; they're separate cultures with differing sets of ideals. This in general is enough to cause rifts, but the Autobots got it into their heads at some point that there were no Decepticon femmes because the Decepticons deemed them weak and had them destroyed at spark-generation. Fact is, there are Decepticon femmes... they just aren't treated as being different or weaker than mechs, which is something they've always sneered down at the Autobots for doing (because let's face it: Elita and her girls kick some major aft, but they still tend to step back and let the boys take the lead whenever they're around. It's part of their culture that mechs are the warriors/protectors and femmes are best left behind the scenes).
Point of fact, Decepticon femmes are actually upgraded into mech-style frames as younglings then again as pre-adults, which they remain in for the first 10 millennia of their adult lives. This is to reinforce to the femmes themselves that they are expected to be as powerful in battle as any mech, as driven to succeed as any mech, and are equal to their mech counterparts. Once a Decepticon femme reaches the end of her tenth millennium, she goes through her final upgrade to a more traditional femme-style frame. The event is marked by a celebration, in which the femme herself is honored for staying true to the Decepticon way of life and the Decepticons who have led her development are honored for guiding her in their teachings.
After this, though, the femme continues to be treated as any other Decepticon, and she would take it as a mark of disgrace were things to change just because she was now a full-fledged adult.
For this reason, none of the Earth-bound Autobots are aware that there are a number of femmes amongst the Decepticon forces on the planet: they're all under 10 millennia. That is, they are until Starscream hits the end of the big 10-mil and the entire faction temporarily changes focus from snatch-and-grab energon raids to preparing for the first big celebration they've had since before the war kicked into high gear.
Oh yeah, and Stars isn't the only femme who'll be coming of age; she's just the eldest. Frenzy isn't too far behind her, nor are Runabout and Runamuck...
Seriously, the possible femmes are fun to think about. Who's got money on some of the Stunticons being femmes?
