Why is Cliffjumper so volatile?

In this context, the bunny is for TFA, but it can be adapted to G1 if you so please.

There’s a reason why Cliffjumper is volatile, and has a lust for violence and a fetish for dedicated weapons. A reason only he knows. They are traces of his past. He may be an Autobot now, but he was once a Decepticon.
Cliffjumper was originally a penetration agent who underwent a transfer into a Minibot’s frame and a name change as part of his cover. His mission was similar to the one Shockwave was sent on: to infiltrate Cybertron Intel and perform espionage. However, after being forced to look at the war from an Autobot point-of-view, he started to have second thoughts. After debating it with himself, he made his move, silently defecting before he even reached the Intel department. He destroyed the communication equipment that he had used to keep in contact with the Decepticons, and denounced his past, never to bring it up again. The Cons figured he had been caught, and also forgot about him.

Add-on bit:
a) Longarm/Shockwave, the second attempt at a penetration agent, immediately recognizes Cliffjumper when he spots the red mech at Autoboot Camp. Despite wanting to kill the traitor on site, he comes to the conclusion that if he does anything, even as small as telling Megatron that Cliffjumper is alive, it could compromise the mission. As such, he decides to keep it a secret.

let me guess, he made Cliff his secretary to keep an optic on him? (no pun intended)
