If you go look at the wiki's article about food, it indicates that - at least in some canons - Cybertronians can eat more than just energon. There was a G1 mention of "oil cake", and one of the comics (I think back in the Marvel era) that had them eating galena crystals and a few other types of minerals. I do know that i_stalk_piccolo took that idea and ran with it, inventing a number of foods usually made of metals, oils and grease, and I've seen at least one other writer who has done similar things (over on dA, a fic based on a fanart series about Megatron deliberately introducing a virus into Hot Rod and Prowl that makes them act like cougars).
