3. - The impression I got from the comics is that Constructicons are a whole race. Specifically, they're a race of Cybertronians who date back to the time of the Primes and were the mechs who did the hard construction work to build the Sun Harvesters. The ones on Earth are just the latest generation, and the ones who took Megatron's side in the war.
