Actually, Pullman mentioned in an interview that it does not indicate the person being gay, though it may tie with a rare gift or talent, like second sight.
And at any rate, given that we're talking about giant alien robots, the point about homosexuality is petty much moot to begin with. It's just silly expecting that they work exactly like us in every respect.
