Hey, it does! I hadn't noticed! But this would make him more a pet than a slave... *thinks* Are slaves/pets considered sentient? People may think they're only mimicking their behavior, instead of actually being self aware like they are. The 'pets' would probably take advatage of that belief.
... Now I want to see Spike or Sparkplug talking to Perceptor and Bumblebee asking why they are talking to a dumb animal. Can you imagine the humans' reaction?

More ideas: A Decepticon agent hidden among the Autobots buys Perceptor from a slave dealer to use his powers or knowledge, then alters the 'paperwork' to make it look like he bought Perceptor from a legitimate exotic pet shop. If the Autobots saw a slave doing super awesome sciencey stuff, they might consider freeing and recruiting him; but if the 'Con agent told them Percy was a pet, not only would they not object morally, but if they saw him playing around with science equipment (or trying to communicate a plea for help), they'd just say 'Oh, how cute!' and shoo him away from the lab.
