We tend to play fast and loose on certain characters age wise and thus their experience for the war and the role they play in it. Ratchet is always given to be an old hat at what he does, and thus is made to be on 'old timer' compared to other bots. What if you reverse that a bit?
-Ratchet was barely out of the academy when the war escalated and he joined.
-Ratchet went from junior medic to CMO, due to the violent nature of the war before the energy crisis, rather quickly since it's always odd how few actual medics there are. (Since Hoist, Grapple, Wheeljack, any other mechs that serve duty in medbay aren't really Medics. Which in my mind means that they can deal with structural damage and some basic internal work, but CPUs and delicate innards only Ratchet has the ability to handle.)
-The Ark mission happened too quickly for him to really get used to being CMO, which is why he developed the feeling of being a burdenif the wiki profile is to be believed on this since he doesn't feel he deserves his rank since so many had to be deactivated for him to get the position.
- The whole reputation about throwing objects was created on accident when he was frantically moving from one patient to another and an annoying superior/soldier/random mech had ended up in the path of a wrench flying due to a loose grasp and not really paying attention to anything but his patients Ratchet.
-The angry Medic that can cow the Lamborghini twins is just a bluff, because one of his old teachers had told him not to let his patients walk all over him and die for their stupidity.
-Few or no mechs realize Ratchet is not as old as they think he is considering how he acts in public.

Date: 2009-09-09 12:27 am (UTC)I'm half way tempted to add a few more age reversals into the mix as well. Mostly Prowl, Bluestreak and perhaps Red Alert.
Though the throwing wrench as an accident reminds me of a particular band class. Our instructor was having a rather difficult time getting us to watch her and not the music, so she while playing she 'accidentally' threw the baton. The ones who laughed she knew were paying attention to her while the ones who didn't obviously weren't. One of the students who wasn't watching even went so far as complain to their parents that she had purposely threw the baton at them.

Date: 2009-09-09 12:32 am (UTC)LoL We had a budding conductor and during one of the few times he had to conduct us by himself he got so flustered that he lost his grip on the baton and it went flying into my section of the group (Percussion) and we jokingly told Freshman after that it was a ploy to anyone who didn't learn to memorize their music quickly enough.
