I... Don't know. I was clicking through the Prompt generator and this just came into my head...
The huge gestalts are actually older than their component parts, you see, they realized that their size made it impossible for them to exist comfortably in most circumstances, so they enginieered a way to break into components. These components are not simply drones or different parts of the Gestalt's personas though; they're their children.
The Aerialbots and Protectobots are each sparked off from Superion and Defensor respectively. They sorta.. cross-raised each others' components: When Superion rested, the Aerialbots were out and learning about the world with Defensor to guide them, and when the Aerialbots slept, their Parent oversaw the baby Protectobots, or Computron babysat both Aerialbots and Protectobots, etc...
Same sort of idea with the decepticon Gestalts, of course, though they had less idea how to raise a bunch of sparklings.
And the best part is:
No one but the gestalts know this, they just assume that gestalts are the results of technical know-how in making five individuals into one giant creature who is a mixture of their personas.
The young combiner teams don't realize this though...
Omega Supreme might have helped babysit too, come to think of it, but he didn't want kids of his own.

The younger members of the combiner know of course- they often saw the other young groups form into the "parents" who helped raise them and they know that their parent raised the other young groups, but they never thought to mention it to the other Autobots. I don't know if that's clear ^^;
