It explains why he's so obsessive about his appearance. No matter what he does, he can't get the feelings of the dings and dents occurring and the imagery of their presence out of his head. And his 'vanity' is mearly him focusing on his looks because of fear.

Misread this at first. I'd thought it said Ironhide as Ironsides. Which is a famous [sort of] navy sailing ship, also called the USS Constitution.
Ironhide has a fun name to play with. :D Interesting.
