My mind just thought about what would happen if certain elements of the anime Escaflowne was put into terms of the Transformers universe. Namely the entire thoughts into energy, and the machine that can change destiny. Especially the Fate Altering Machine as I could see Megatron from a point when the Decepticon faction actually did have valid causes thinking about using such for the good of all Cybertron.
Though considering how some of fandom see model types like humans see ethnic backgrounds, there could be thoughts of one model type being the only ones who could create such a machine or hinder it, and thus hunted down or destroyed depending on the route one went.
For those who don't know this anime, the Fate Altering Machine is just as the name implies. It was basically this conglomeration of science, magic, and steampunk elements that could allow one to see how the future will play out and then change it to suit what the user of the machine wants to happen instead. Thus changing the future of everyone forcefully and against their will. Even making people fall in love with one another like one would play with dolls.
I-I hope that wasn't too confusing, because I don't exactly want to spoil the anime entirely by telling the plot in case anyone is going to watch it at some point.

But it has it's redeeming qualities that make me still love it, and it definitely all depends on if you saw the movie or the movie first in your rating them against one another.

Date: 2009-10-18 05:01 am (UTC)Things that are good about Escaflowne:
Giant robots (or robotic armor as the case may be) wearing capes and fighting with swords
a sort of binary bond (in TF terms) between mecha and pilot
Yes, the whole fate changing and direction thing and how people who mean well can inadvertently cause a really bloody future to happen. (this also reminds me a bit of Farscape, which I've re-watched recently, and how the good guys seem to inadvertently cause a lot of war and death just by associating with others.)
Dragons included. (though I don't think there's ever a mecha vs dragon battle, which would have been awesome. It was usually pilot/warrior vs dragon.)
The really slick robot/armor to dragon transformation scheme Escaflowne has, complete with cape=wings.
The whole science & sorcery or tech & magic blend that was awesome when 80's cartoons did it and still is.
A fic concept like this would also be a good opportunity for using canon characters with original or alternative alt-modes. Like
Seekers that actually transform into predatory flying creatures...or biplanes...or something.

Date: 2009-10-22 03:55 pm (UTC)Other than the Fate Altering Machine, I wonder the implications on Escaflowne (the mecha) itself, since it, well, transforms from bipedal mode to dragon-mode. I mean, there could be one of Dornkirk's scientists that would've toyed with the idea of meshing pilot and mecha as one (permanently or not hasn't been/isn't factored into the equation). What if somewhere along the line through a not-very-pleasant process, Van winds up in that situation? The alternative Escaflowne gaining a spark through whatever means (coincidence, inevitable, what-have-you).
